3rd August - Leh to Lamayuru (3492m)

Distance - 116km

Ride Time - 6hrs 19mins

Average - 16.7km/hr

Total Ascent - 1625m

Total Descent - 1363m

Leh has a huge military presence, so the first part the of ride was through a military base. I then faced a long climb up onto a plato before continuing on through the stark landscape I have come to expect from Ladakh. I passed through a number of small towns include Nimmu where I stopped for breakfast and eventually arrived at Lamayuru which is famous for the Gompa which resides there. The town of Lamayuru is nice with a number of homestays and restaurants to support the visiting tourists.

4th August - Lamayuru to Kargil over Fotu La (4105m) and Namika La (3827m)

Distance - 107km

Ride Time - 6hrs 19ins

Average - 14.2km/hr

Total Ascent - 1087m

Total Descent - 1877m

I started the morning with a tough climb up to Fotu La. This was a nice way to wake up the legs in the morning. The goal was Kargil which is a large town that resides at the crossroads and gateway into Zanskar. With more time I would have liked to visit Zanskar, but unfortunately that will have to wait for another time. I stopped for lunch in Mulbekh which is famous for it's 8th century Maitreya buddha. Kargil marks the start of the Muslim area of Jammu-Kashmir and you could definitely see the difference in the way people dress and the presence of Mosques.

5th August - Kargil to Drass over

Distance - 59km

Ride Time - 3hrs 53ins

Average - 13.8km/hr

Total Ascent - 824m

Total Descent - 412m

Decided to have a short day today as the ride from Drass to Srinigar was going to be long with not much in terms of services in between. The town of Drass claims to be the second coldest place on earth. Beside that it is a nice small town and I spent much of the day walking the sreets, eating and relaxing.

6th August - Drass to Srinigar over Zoji La (3545m)

Distance - 150km

Ride Time - 8hrs 18mins

Average - 16.1km/hr

Total Ascent - 849m

Total Descent - 2243m

My longest cycling day of the trip happens to be the last. It wasn't too strenuous as there was an 80km descent into Srinigar. The climb over Zoji La was great, but a huge military presence was a bit of a distraction. The descent from Zoji La was terrible with really bad roads and lots of dust - not pleasant at all.

Big military presence along this road. Soldiers hiding in all sorts of foxholes.

Temporary camps for shepherds grazing their animals.
